Links to University:
Educational links between TAFE systems and University
are being firmly established and students can receive
course credits, or advanced standing, for entry into
relevant Degree Programs.
Teaching and Assessment Methods:
Students usually attend three or four lectures, tutorials
and computer lab sessions each day from Monday to
Friday. Classes can last from one to four hours. Each
educational institution will have its own teaching
and assessment methods. In general however, the Australian
education system operates in the following ways:
Students are encouraged to participate actively in
class. This may require in answering of questions,
putting forward of original ideas, or presenting a
class paper.
The relationship between the students and the academic
staff members is informal and relaxed. Students should
not hesitate to ask the staff for assistance, particularly
when the student has not understood something which
has been said.
Plagiarism (the use of another person’s thoughts
or writings as one’s own) is an offence. Instead
students are expected to acknowledge the original
sources, and use these as basis to develop their own
ideas.
Most lecturers prefer that essays and assignments
be typed rather than handwritten. Students are encouraged
to use the computers, scanner, laminator and photocopying
device on campus.
Methods of assessing students vary from course to
course. The professional system of Regular class and
computer laboratory sessions, Group activities through
a Management Learning Team (MLT), Case studies and
problem-solving exercises, Projects, Assignments,
Syndicate presentations/seminars, Workshops sessions,
Supporting audio-video sessions, Written examinations
is employed. In each unit the method of assessment
is set out at the beginning of the term.
Lecturers and tutors are usually willing to discuss
(either in class or individually), any problems student
may have in understanding lectures and discussions,
writing assignments or preparing for examinations.
A range of other programs are conducted to assist
students to make the transition to study in Australia.
Academic Timetable and Summer
School:
The timetable for course is based on 4 terms with
the first term beginning in February each year. A
mid term break of at least two weeks separate the
two terms. Each term is about ten weeks long with
approximately 8 of these weeks for teaching, one for
study and exams and one week free from class contact.
A summer semester of about 8 weeks is conducted between
December and January and early February each year
for mid-year intake students and for students who
wish to fast track their course.
Exemptions:
Information regarding status of credits or exemptions
for the study already undertaken cannot generally
be given until the application has been received and
the student has been accepted into the course. Students
would then be required to make a separate application
for status on the appropriate application form and
is required to attach details of the course curriculum
previously studied.
